7 Reasons why Scolding is NOT an Option
When I decided to move here in Thailand and look for a decent
job, I tried my best to penetrate and be part of fashion industry, marketing or telecommunication but
seems that luck are not favoring my side.
Out of the blue, a friend ask me if I
could teach children and of course I answered yes. In desperation of finding a job, I did not even think on what I was about to enter.
The very first day was crucial, I don’t know where to begin
or what to start. The environment was so noisy, the students were so naughty
and the weather was totally devastating. In other words, it’s like hell. I lost my temper and started yelling, scolding and even wagging my finger, but either of those cannot stop them from bugging my patience.
Teachers can easily drop their temper, and when you lose it
you have no choice but to brag yourself and start your thing. At the end of the day, you were defeated by your own way coz' it's not effective at all.
Here are the reasons why scolding and
yelling was never an option.
1. It will not CHANGE their behavior
The only time students changes their behavior is always unpredictable. But this can be easily manipulated with a teacher that they love/like and
trust. Thus, Scolding and yelling can cause misbehavior or lose of interest.
2 Temporary Improvement
Scolding or yelling your students can be effective but in a
short period of time. They will act the way what you want them to behave but
eventually they will go back on their unfinished business. The only reason why
it is working is because teachers has the authority and power to scold on a
student.
3. Loses your Influence
Scolding and yelling can lose your influence as a teacher. The students
will eventually dislike and distrust you. They will more often have the
interest to disturb your class or annoy you more. Let’s be honest, you need to
form your army, and when one soldier is a pain in the neck it will make your
life miserable.
4. Totally Stressful
Scolding and Yelling is a sure sign that you let miserable behavior penetrate your nerves. It will leave you with frustration and anxiety and it is totally bad for your health. Thus, it will make you an ineffective
teacher.
5. You’ll never defend yourself
When you are scolding or yelling your student and you have a
complaint from a parent, you will surely have difficulty on defending yourself.
You just cannot say that you lost your temper, it would not be acceptable.
Let’s face it, no level of disrespect can give you an authority to yell at your
students.
6. Losing your Gracefulness
I’m telling you, losing your temper can be very ugly (literally). Try to
take a video of yourself at your highest peak and surely you will see all the
devil within you. It’s not pretty at all. Your prepared morning aura will vanish and it’s
hard to regain it.
7. You don’t want to be a bad example
Your students sees you as a role model and having a not so cool
attitude towards them can be crucial. They will see it as if it is right at
all.
So
what will you do?
Being a teacher is really a tough and a rough job, It can be a
pain in the neck at some point. It will totally test your patience,
but no matter how frustrated you are with your students, scolding and yelling
will never be an option.
Instead of being “that” teacher, that they totally don’t want to
see, you can be the teacher that they would love to be with every day. Try to
be close with your students, hear their thoughts and ideas and try to be one of
them. Surely you will find a clues on how to get their attention without tuning
your voice.
Make some interesting activities that everyone
will surely enjoy. Be cool and be fierce.
